From the dialog above, we could see some of the sentences that use yang. It is called as the relative pronoun that will explain about the specification of the pronoun or noun. Usually in English, we know about which, that, and who as the relative pronoun which has the function to explain the detail about the noun (object and subject). In this case, bahasa Indonesia only uses one relative pronoun for whole pronoun and noun, that is yang (which, that, who). In bahasa Indonesia, yang has some other function that described about :
- to mean who, that, which (relative pronoun)
Example :
Orang yang minum kopi itu adalah suami saya (the person who is drinking coffee is my husband)
Usually the sentence that use relative pronoun that explain about noun or pronoun will use adalah as the auxiliary which could be ialah as the alternative. However, this word is usually omitted in speaking so we never hear about that word in the conversation.
Another style in expressing yang for the speaking also:
- Yang minum kopi itu adalah suami saya (“the meaning is same as the example above”)
- Yang masuk rumah itu adalah kakek saya (the person who is entering the house is my grandfather)
In speaking, the people usually omit identity of pronoun (in this case is person, orang) and put yang as the first word in a sentence. It also happens in the interrogative sentence, for example:
- Siapa orang yang makan apel saya (Who ate my apple)
Could be changed as yang makan apel saya siapa? Or siapa makan apel saya? In this case, yang is omitted but mostly people understand about the meaning of that sentence.
- To identify the subject distinctly.
- Saya buat itu (I made it), usually it is used in English but in bahasa Indonesia, we use yang that is put before the verb So it becomes saya yang buat itu. (I am the one who made it)
- Saya yang tulis surat itu (I am the person who write that letter)
- To emphasize an ordinal number
- Yang pertama (The first)
- Yang kedua (The second)
- Yang ketiga (The third)
